Dear Friends and Supporters:

Mouthfeel Press is an independent, small press that provides a voice to both emerging and established writers living in the borderlands region, from Texas to California, and Latin America. Mouthfeel publishes both women and men, in both English and Spanish, and is unique in its desire to promote innovative, experimental, and contemporary poetry with engaging themes such as gender, sex, culture, language, folklore, spirituality, politics, art, and geographic borderland issuess.

Mouthfeel Press is committed to raising $25,250. We plan to budget approximately $5,250 to fund a trip for five female poets in order to represent Mouthfeel Press at this year’s Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP) Conference in February 2012. $20,000 will be budgeted to fund the publication of upcoming books in the coming year. Mouthfeel Press is committed to publishing three full-length books of poetry, a children’s book, and up to ten chapbooks in 2012. In addition, the money raised will be utilized to help promote the work of authors and provide assistance for readings and travel.

The title of our AWP panel presentation is Border Bodies - Womanhood in Verse: A Reading and Discussion with the Mouthfeel Press Poets and will feature the work and reflections of five women— Ire’ne Lara Silva, Laura Cesarco Eglin, Elisa A. Garza, Katherine Hoerth and Maria Miranda Maloney—who come from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds. What they have in common, however, is a dedication to broadening the literary conversation about womanhood and borderlands across the world.  In presenting and reading at the conference, the poets will bring diversity to the literary community, and promote the voices of women that are traditionally silenced or marginalized.

The AWP conference is the pre-eminent annual literary gathering in North America. Competition is fierce for one of the reading/panel slots as the AWP Selection Panel chooses only approximately one-third of the submitted proposals.

By sending your donation today, you can help send five dedicated women poets to Chicago to represent Mouthfeel Press and the border region at the 2012 AWP Conference.  Your contribution will help fund future publications and will greatly assist Mouthfeel Press in continuing its mission to give voice to a region which so desperately and eloquently wants to be heard.  As of today, the authors published under Mouthfeel Press are contributing to this mission by being active advocates and members in their respective literary communities. Many poets like Katherine Hoerth, Ire’ne Lara Silva, Nancy Lorenza Green, Cassandra Love and Laura Cesarco Elgin donate their time to conduct presentations and workshops at schools and community centers. Mouthfeel Press not only hopes to continue publishing brilliant voices but also attract authors who are committed to advancing borderland literature throughout the U.S. and abroad.

Your donations are tax-deductible. We will gratefully acknowledge all donors on the Mouthfeel Press website. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me, Maria Miranda Maloney, founder and publisher, at mouthfeelpress@yahoo.com.

We thank you profoundly for your time and your support.

Sincerely,

Maria Miranda Maloney
